TAVIS’S STORY

Tavis began his martial arts journey at the age of 12 as a wrestler, developing a foundation in grappling that would later shape his approach to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). Wrestling through high school instilled discipline, resilience, and adaptability—values that carried over into his four years of service in the Marine Corps, where he further honed his mental and physical toughness.

After leaving the military, Tavis embraced his adventurous spirit, working as a ski instructor and spending over two decades in the adventure travel industry. These roles deepened his appreciation for activities that challenge the mind and body.

In March 2019, Tavis began training at Esteem Jiu Jitsu in Petaluma, CA, and was immediately drawn to its connection to wrestling and the mental and physical demands it requires. In late 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic impacted his employment, Tavis relocated to Minnesota and resumed his training at the St. Paul Jiu Jitsu Academy. There, his dedication was rewarded with a blue belt in June 2023.

Upon returning to Northern California, Tavis decided to channel his passion for BJJ and his desire to build community by opening Sonoma Valley Jiu Jitsu in Sonoma, CA. His vision was to create more than just a gym—it would be a welcoming space for people of all ages and skill levels to train, grow, and connect.

Whether students are seeking to improve their fitness, learn self-defense, or challenge themselves mentally and physically, Tavis is committed to guiding them on their journey. His mission is to foster a supportive community where everyone can experience the transformative power of BJJ.
